Summary
Sterile water for injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic, preservative-free water preparation intended to be used as a diluent or solvent for injectable medications. Because it lacks preservatives, sterile water is designed for single-use only once a vial or ampoule is opened, and any unused portion should be discarded to minimize the risk of microbial contamination. Usage
Sterile water is used to reconstitute or dilute injectable substances—such as peptides, lyophilised drugs, and some small-molecule compounds—to the desired concentration immediately prior to administration or experimental application. Its preservative-free nature makes it suitable where additives like benzyl alcohol are not desired or compatible with the material being studied. Once opened and used, sterile water should not be stored for later use; any remaining volume is typically discarded, and fresh sterile water is used for subsequent preparations to maintain maximal sterility and minimize contamination risk.
